Windows Repair (re-image) on the Easy-Touch® Pro

Starting 10/13/2017, Easy-Touch Pro testers now include a built-in repair option

Windows Repair on the Easy-Touch Pro allows the tester to be reset to a factory default state. The repair process will take about a half-hour. You will need to spend a few minutes starting the recovery process and a few more minutes completing it. During the repair, the tester will restart several times.

Before beginning the process:

  • Attach a keyboard and mouse to the tester.
  • Backup your database unless you don’t wish to save previous data.

Booting the Tester

The first step in the repair process is loading the correct menu. To find this this menu, turn on your tester. You may have to follow different instructions depending on the way your tester boots. Follow the instructions that correspond with the screen that loads when you boot your tester.

Option 1: The tester boots into Easy-Wire®.

  1. On the keyboard, press CTRL+ALT+DEL to enter a menu.
  2. With the menu open, press the SHIFT key and hold it down during the next step.
  3. While holding SHIFT, click the power icon in the lower right-hand corner and select Restart.
  4. Keep holding SHIFT until you are in the Choose an option menu, then proceed with #2 Once you have entered the Choose an option menu.

Option 2: The tester boots to a Windows login screen.

  1. Check to make sure there is a power icon in the lower right-hand corner. If there isn’t, click in the middle of the screen with the mouse.
  2. With the power icon visible, press the SHIFT key and hold it down during the next step.
  3. While holding SHIFT, click the power icon in the lower right-hand corner and select Restart.
  4. Keep holding SHIFT until you are in the Choose an option menu, then proceed with #2 Once you have entered the Choose an option menu.

Option 3: The tester boots to a black screen or error.

Choose an option menu:

Once you have found the Choose an option menu, follow the steps below to complete the repair.

  1. Select Troubleshoot.
  2. Select Reset this PC.
  3. Select either Keep my files or Remove everything (doesn’t matter which you choose).
  4. The tester will restart and enter a blue screen with a command prompt.
  5. Once the command prompt has finished loading, it will show X:\Windows\System32. Type reimage and press ENTER.
  6. Select option 1 to remove everything or option 2 to keep the database*, then press ENTER.
  7. Remove any thumb drives that may be attached and confirm that this will delete data from the tester by pressing Y.
  8. If you chose to keep the database, the process will pause twice so you may check to see whether the database was copied successfully. Check to make sure there are no errors before continuing, otherwise press CTRL+C to abort. Once you have confirmed the database has been copied, or after you have chosen to remove everything on the database, you may leave the tester unattended for about 15 minutes while it finishes automated setup.
  9. The tester will restart at least twice during this automated setup. Once complete, you will be at a Windows desktop with a command prompt.
  10. Click on the command prompt and press enter to bring up the security dialog.
  11. Enter the password signature1 and press Yes.
  12. The tester will restart and enter another desktop with a command prompt.
  13. Click on the command prompt and press enter to bring up the security dialog.
  14. Select Yes on the security dialog.
  15. TouchDef.exe will load. Select OK if you have an external monitor attached, otherwise select Cancel. If you select OK, you will be prompted to physically touch the screen on the tester in a moment, once it turns mostly white.
  16. You will be prompted to log in on Cirris’ network with a user name. Press ENTER, and select N when prompted to try logging in again. (This is for updates and calibration when the tester is at Cirris’ headquarters.)
  17. When prompted to finalize, select Y.
  18. The tester will restart once more and boot into Easy-Wire.
  19. The tester should be fully recovered at this point, but if there are issues, contact Cirris for support.

* Only the database file is retained. It is first copied to the recovery partition and then moved back after recovery files have been copied over. Larger databases (~5GB) may require additional support to retain. The database is assumed to be good, though it may have issues and may not successfully be retained during this process.
